The delegate of the Andalusian Regional Government in Cádiz, Ana Mestre, visited the area where emergency works were carried out to improve the A-381 road at the height of Los Barrios. These works, which have now been completed, aimed to repair damages to the road and definitively contain the sliding of a slope of the embankment at the exit branch of the right carriageway of the junction at kilometer point 85. This intervention, costing 736,850 euros, was awarded to the company Iter Trivium.
Mestre was accompanied, among others, by the sub-delegate of the Board in Campo de Gibraltar, Eva Pajares, and the territorial delegate of Development, Infrastructure, and Territory Planning, Mercedes Colombo. According to a note from the Board, Mestre appreciated the commitment of the Andalusian Government “to such an important road in the province, which needed a quick response and required this emergency work to ensure road safety in the area. Additionally, the delegate recalled that the A-381 is a fundamental route for long-distance transport, connecting the Port of Algeciras and the A-7 road with the AP-4, constituting the backbone of the province. Moreover, Ana Mestre insisted on the commitment of the Andalusian Government to the improvement and maintenance of the good condition of the roads in our province’s regional network.
The completed works on the A-381 consisted of repairing damages on the mentioned section and stabilizing the ongoing sliding. For this purpose, a 74-meter-long screen of 200 mm micropiles with steel reinforcement was executed, serving as a containment element for the current section of the road, along with the demolition of the affected surface, its reconstruction, and the replacement of road markings and containment elements. At the exit branch of the right carriageway of the junction located at kilometer 85 of the A-381, in the roundabout and beginning of the service road towards the right bank of the Palmones River, a sinking of the roadway was evident, causing cracks, fissures, and potholes in the surface, as well as significant deformation in the roadway that led to a modification of the road’s gradient, making its repair essential for road safety.
The situation worsened with last year’s torrential rains, and the sliding circle moved even more, a circumstance that continued to increase and required this action, preceded by provisional pothole filling and continuous crack filling along the break circle, as well as its control and monitoring to detect the evolution of the sliding. In the context of this visit, it was recalled that, regarding the A-381, an investment of seven million euros was made on this road, through the cost of this action, 2.6 million euros to act on other points of this route, and 3.6 million euros invested in the new lighting of the tunnels to adapt them to European standards.
